We recently sat down with Barry Conlon, Overhaul’s CEO and Founder, to ask him about his company’s recent accomplishments, how he has built a culture of inclusivity, and his advice for aspiring founders.
Avanta Ventures (AV): Barry, what problem is your company working to solve?
Barry Colon (BC): Supply chains require real-time visibility and risk monitoring solutions to prepare against and actively fend off threats. Overhaul is the only device-agnostic solution for supply chain risk management. We deliver visibility, risk management, insurance and more all in one package. The supply chain industry has unique needs, and we’re uniquely positioned to fulfill them.
AV: Over the past year, what business accomplishment are you most proud of?
BC: Overhaul recently acquired our first company, SensiGuard Security Services. Through this acquisition, we’ve expanded our global footprint, enhanced the expertise of our already impressive team and become the largest and most comprehensive in-transit risk management provider in the world.
AV: At the early stage of a company, building an inclusive culture is essential. What are three things you’ve done at Overhaul to foster an inclusive culture?
BC: Everything comes down to communication. First, it must occur at all levels, internally and externally, between departments, etc. Second, transparency is key – we value it in our visibility solutions and our messaging. Third, without listening, talking is pointless. Communication includes a commitment to both. We’ve created a community where we not only consider all feedback but eagerly seek it out and encourage everyone to be open and honest.
AV: What advice would you give aspiring founders based on your journey to date?
BC: You need total commitment to your goal. Nothing less is acceptable. If something doesn’t go to plan, pivot fast, and be willing to readjust your strategy. Be ready to learn on the job and to adapt to the unexpected.
AV: Let’s end with something fun. What is your favorite city to visit and why?
BC: Dublin, Ireland. It’s home, and it resonates with what we’re doing here. Celtic mythology represents eagles as wise omens, always on watch, ready to raise the alarm at the first sign of trouble. That’s what our technology does for our customers — it keeps them ready and aware. And much like home, it provides them with a sense of safety and peace.
